Despre The African American Museum in Philadelphia
The African American Museum in Philadelphia, at 701 Arch Street in Philadelphia, is a museum dedicated to the history, art and culture of African Americans. It opened in 1976 during the Bicentennial and sits a short walk from Independence Mall, which makes it a natural companion to the city's best-known sites of American freedom.
The story behind it
The museum was founded in 1976, the year the United States marked its 200th anniversary. It was created to preserve and share the heritage of Black Americans, and it remains an anchor for telling the part of Philadelphia's story that the Revolution-era sites nearby often leave out. Its main exhibition, Audacious Freedom, looks at the lives of Black Philadelphians in the century after 1776.
The neighbourhood has many stories of people who shaped the city. One is Rebecca Cole, a Philadelphia physician and one of the first Black women in the country to earn a medical degree, widely described as the second. She cared for poor women and children and was known for taking medical care into people's homes when they had no other access to it. Her life is a good reminder of how much of the city's history was written by people who rarely made the monuments.
What to look for
- The core exhibition on Black Philadelphians from the nation's founding years, which puts local people and families at the centre of the story.
- The changing art and history exhibitions, which often feature contemporary Black artists alongside historical objects, so each visit can differ.
- The museum's position on Arch Street, close to Independence Mall, which lets you connect its story with the better-known sites a few blocks away.
- The names and stories on the interpretive panels, which highlight individual people such as doctors, activists and community builders rather than abstract events.
Tips for your visit
- Allow roughly one to two hours inside if you like to read the exhibition texts, and check current opening hours and admission before you go.
- Morning visits tend to be quieter, which leaves more room to read and take in the displays.
- Independence Mall, Franklin Square, Reading Terminal Market and Chinatown are all within an easy walk, so it fits well into a day of sightseeing.
- Combine it with the nearby historic sites if you want a fuller picture of Philadelphia's story, from the founding era to the present.
