Sobre Cabrillo Bridge
Cabrillo Bridge is the arched concrete bridge that carries El Prado across a canyon to the western entrance of Balboa Park in San Diego, California. It was built for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, and it still serves as the park's grand approach, with views of the downtown skyline and the palms in the canyon below.
The story behind it
San Diego staged the Panama-California Exposition to mark the opening of the Panama Canal, and the city needed a dramatic way to bring visitors into the exposition grounds. The bridge was the answer: a long, arched span over the canyon, named after Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, the explorer who reached San Diego Bay in 1542.
Most exposition buildings were meant to be temporary, but some, including those around the California Quadrangle at the end of the bridge, were built to last. That is why the walk across the bridge still ends in the same setting visitors saw over a century ago. The arches are also tall and wide enough that a highway now runs underneath, so the bridge works as both a ceremonial entrance and a piece of working infrastructure.
What to look for
- Look out from the railings toward downtown San Diego, where the skyline appears above the canyon and its palm trees.
- Glance down at the arches and the highway running beneath them, which shows how much room the structure leaves below.
- Notice the row of lamps along the bridge, which gives the crossing a formal, ceremonial feel.
- As you reach the far end, look ahead to the California Quadrangle and its tower, the first major building you meet on entering the park.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 15 to 20 minutes if you just want to cross, pause for photos and look at the canyon, longer if you continue into the park.
- Morning and late afternoon light are the most flattering for photos, and the walk is more pleasant when it is not midday hot.
- The bridge is part of a public street and open to walkers, so there is no entry fee to cross it on foot.
- Balboa Park's museums and gardens are right at the far end, so plan the bridge as the start of a longer visit and check current opening hours for any museum you want to enter.
See it on a quest
The bridge makes most sense as part of a longer walk, and San Diego: Balboa Park Adventure takes you through this area on foot. You reach the bridge as one stop on a route through Balboa Park, the app tells you about each place when you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. You can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no group to join. One ticket covers the whole group.
