Sobre Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo
The Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo is a landscaped waterway and park in the heart of downtown Pueblo, Colorado, built along a former channel of the Arkansas River. It turns an old piece of flood-control history into a place to stroll, eat and sit by the water in a city better known for steel.
The story behind it
Pueblo grew up as an industrial city on the Arkansas River, and the river was both its lifeline and its danger. After the devastating flood of 1921, the river was redirected into a new course, which left its old channel behind as a dry bed running through the centre of town.
Decades later, that abandoned channel was reimagined as the Riverwalk, with water brought back into it and paths, bridges and gathering spaces built alongside. The result is a waterway that is partly a work of design, but one that sits exactly where the river once ran.
What to look for
- Notice how the water and walkways sit in a channel set apart from the surrounding streets, a reminder that this was once the real riverbed.
- Look at the footbridges that cross the water, which make good spots to see the whole stretch of the Riverwalk.
- Watch for the boats that glide along the channel when they are running, which are a distinctive part of the scene.
- Check the patios and storefronts along the banks, where the downtown buildings face the water instead of turning their backs to it.
Tips for your visit
- Plan on an hour for a relaxed stroll, longer if you stop for a meal or a boat ride.
- Walking is free, and you can wander the paths without going inside anything. Check current opening hours and availability for boat rides and individual businesses.
- Late afternoon and early evening are pleasant for softer light and a cooler walk, especially in summer.
- The Riverwalk sits close to downtown Pueblo, so it combines easily with a wander through the nearby streets.
