Sobre St. Nicholas Church
St. Nicholas Church is a small Gothic brick church on Šv. Mikalojaus street in the Old Town of Vilnius, Lithuania. It is counted among the oldest churches in the city and is one of the few medieval buildings here that stayed in use as a place of worship through every period of Vilnius history. Its quiet, plain look makes it an easy stop to pass without noticing, and a rewarding one when you slow down.
The story behind it
St. Nicholas is a medieval church, dating from the Gothic period, and it has served its original purpose through the centuries, including the Soviet decades when open religious practice was discouraged and many churches were closed or repurposed. That long, unbroken use is a large part of what makes it special in a city that has been rebuilt, damaged and renamed many times.
Right beside the church stands a sculpture of St. Christopher, the patron saint of Vilnius, who appears in the city's coat of arms. Nobody knows for certain why the city chose him. Christopher is traditionally remembered as a strong man who carried travellers across a river, and that image suits a town that grew up where two rivers meet.
What to look for
- The sculpture of St. Christopher beside the church, which shows the saint who watches over the city and features in its coat of arms.
- The simple brick walls, which show the restrained Gothic style of the building, very different from the Baroque churches elsewhere in the Old Town.
- The small scale of the church compared with the grander buildings nearby, a reminder of how modest its early parish was.
- The narrow street setting, where the church sits among everyday Old Town houses rather than on a big open square.
Tips for your visit
- Plan about 10 to 15 minutes for the exterior and the St. Christopher sculpture, longer if you go inside.
- It is a working church, so check current opening hours and dress and behave respectfully if you enter during a service.
- Soft morning light or early evening is best for photographing the brick, and the street is usually calmer than the main avenues.
- It is a short walk from the Town Hall area, so you can combine it with other Old Town sights in one stroll.
See it on a quest
Old Town Gems - Vilnius is a good way to see this church as part of a longer walk through the area on foot. You reach it as one stop on the route, the app tells you about the place when you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join.
