Sobre Seville Quarter
Seville Quarter is a complex of bars, restaurants and courtyards on East Government Street in downtown Pensacola, Florida, that grew out of a single brick warehouse built in 1871. It is one of the city's best-known nightlife addresses and a regular stop on local ghost tours, thanks to a long-told story about a bartender who never left.
The story behind it
The brick building was put up in 1871 for the Pensacola Cigar and Tobacco Company. It served as a warehouse for decades before a new chapter began in the 1960s, when trumpeter Bob Snow opened a music saloon inside it called Rosie O'Grady's. The place caught on, and over roughly a dozen years the old warehouse and the buildings around it were linked into the maze that became Seville Quarter. The Mitchell family has run it since 1988.
The ghost story is the other half of its reputation. A paranormal travel guide that draws on folklorist Alan Brown's books about haunted Pensacola reports that the complex is haunted by a former bartender who died in one of the coolers. It is a legend rather than a documented fact, but it is the reason the complex turns up so often on after-dark walks.
What to look for
- The weathered brickwork of the original 1871 warehouse, which still shows the building's industrial past beneath the bar signs.
- The way the complex spills across several connected buildings and courtyards rather than sitting behind one front door.
- The name Rosie O'Grady's, which belongs to the music saloon that started the whole story in the 1960s.
- The old brick walls around the courtyards, where the bartender legend says to listen once the crowds thin out.
Tips for your visit
- Give the outside and the street frontage 15 to 20 minutes; stay longer if you plan to eat, drink or catch music.
- Daylight is best for seeing the brickwork, while evenings show the place at its liveliest. Check current opening hours before you go.
- Since the venues serve alcohol, expect age rules at the door and a busier crowd on weekend nights.
- It sits in downtown Pensacola, so other historic streets are an easy walk away and you can combine it with the rest of the area on foot.
See it on a quest
Ghost Hunt in Pensacola is a good way to see Seville Quarter, since the ghost lore is a big part of what makes the place interesting. You reach it on foot as one stop on a longer route through the area, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle on the spot. There is no guide to book and no group to join, and one ticket covers your whole group.
