Sobre Museum of Vojvodina
The Museum of Vojvodina is a museum on Dunavska street in the centre of Novi Sad, Serbia, housed in a grand palace from the early 20th century. The building was first a court of law, and it still carries details that hint at that past. It is a good stop for anyone who wants to understand the history of the Vojvodina region and see one of the old town's more formal buildings up close.
The story behind it
The palace was built at the very start of the 20th century as the Court palace, and it served as the seat of justice for roughly its first sixty years. Only later did it become a museum, which is why its architecture feels more like an official building than a purpose-built gallery.
Next door stood a prison, and the building beside the former court is now home to the Archives of Vojvodina. Together, these neighbouring buildings make Dunavska street a small cluster of institutions: law, records and memory sitting side by side.
What to look for
- Look at the facade for the carved lion's head, a common architectural motif that is linked here to the strength of the law and moral fortitude.
- Notice the formal, symmetrical look of the palace, which still reads as a courthouse rather than a typical museum.
- Walk a few steps along the street to see the neighbouring building that now houses the Archives of Vojvodina and was once tied to the court's world.
- Step back across the street for a view of the whole front, which shows how the palace sits among the other buildings on Dunavska.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about 15 minutes for the exterior and its surroundings, and more if you plan to go inside. Check current opening hours and what is on display before you go.
- Morning or late afternoon light is kind to the facade, and the street is calmer than the main square.
- The museum is close to the old town centre, so it combines easily with a stroll along Dunavska and a walk toward the Danube Park area.
- Wear comfortable shoes, as the centre of Novi Sad is best explored on foot and most sights are a short walk apart.
