Sobre Castle Keep, Newcastle upon Tyne
The Castle Keep is the surviving Norman stronghold of Newcastle upon Tyne, built in the 12th century on the hill that gave the city its name. It stands beside the Black Gate and the railway viaduct, and you can climb its stairs to a rooftop with wide views over the River Tyne and its bridges.
The story behind it
The city takes its name from a "new castle" raised here in 1080 by Robert Curthose, eldest son of William the Conqueror. That first fortress was a timber motte-and-bailey. In the 1170s, under Henry II, it was replaced in stone by the square keep you see today, a building meant to guard the lowest crossing point of the Tyne in the north of England.
The Black Gate, the gatehouse in front of the keep, was added in the 13th century under Henry III. Over the centuries the castle lost its military role, and houses and workshops grew up around it. In the 19th century the railway was driven straight through the old castle grounds, which is why trains now pass so close to the walls. Today the keep is looked after by the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne.
What to look for
- The thick stone walls of the keep, which show how heavily a Norman stronghold was built for defence.
- The Black Gate, the separate gatehouse in front of the keep, which was later lived in by tenants who gave it its name.
- The railway viaduct running beside the castle, a striking reminder of how the Victorian city cut through the medieval one.
- The view from the roof, where the Tyne, the Tyne Bridge and the High Level Bridge all come into sight.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about 45 minutes to an hour inside, longer if you like reading the displays and lingering on the roof.
- You can go inside, but entry is ticketed and the spiral stairs are narrow and steep, so check current opening hours and access details before you go.
- Clear, bright weather gives the best rooftop views, and morning is usually quieter.
- The Cathedral of St Nicholas, the High Level Bridge and the Quayside are all a short walk away, so the keep fits easily into a wider stroll through the city centre.
