Munich

Walk along the remnants of Munich's protective embrace, the medieval city walls that once encircled and defined this thriving city. The oldest sections date back to the late 12th century, with the first complete wall circuit finished around 1175, creating a secure boundary for Munich's flourishing trade and commerce. A second, more elaborate wall system was constructed between 1285 and 1347, featuring eight impressive gates that controlled movement in and out of the medieval city. Of these eight historic gates, three survive today in remarkable condition: the Karlstor, Isartor, and Sendlinger Tor, each standing as a guardian of Munich's past. The remaining wall sections are preserved at Thomas-Wimmer-Ring, displayed behind glass so visitors can examine the craftsmanship of medieval builders. Munich Wall

The Theatinerkirche (Theatine Church) is one of the most impressive Baroque churches in Germany, standing on Odeonsplatz at the edge of Munich's Old Town with its twin towers and bright yellow facade.

The church was founded in 1663 by Elector Ferdinand Maria and his wife Henriette Adelaide of Savoy, as a thanksgiving for the birth of their long-awaited heir, Max Emanuel. They wanted a church modelled on the grand churches of Rome, and they got one. The design was initially by Agostino Barelli, inspired by Sant'Andrea della Valle in Rome, making it the first Baroque church north of the Alps.

Construction was dramatic. Barelli and the local builders clashed constantly, and the Italian architect was eventually replaced by Enrico Zuccalli, who completed the two towers (each 64.6 metres tall) and the dome (71 metres). The Rococo facade was designed much later, in 1765, by Francois de Cuvillies the Elder, and finished by his son.

The interior is brilliant white stucco with no painted ceiling, unusual for a Baroque church. The crypt beneath the church, the Furstengruft, contains the tombs of members of the Wittelsbach dynasty, the ruling family of Bavaria for over 700 years.

The church was severely damaged during World War II and underwent reconstruction from 1946, largely completed by 1955.

Denkmal für Justus von Liebig

Built between 1475-1495 by master builder Jorg von Halsbach, this magnificent brick construction set a new standard for what a hall church could achieve. The cathedral's most distinctive feature is its twin towers, each soaring 98 meters skyward, crowned with the iconic onion domes that were added in 1525 and have become synonymous with Munich's silhouette. Frauenkirche holds the distinction of being the largest hall church in the world, a breathtaking claim backed by the soaring interior space that defies the weight of brick and stone. The cathedral suffered devastating damage during World War II but rose again through painstaking reconstruction from 1948-1955, restored to its full Gothic glory. Frauenkirche

Marienplatz is the central square of Munich and has been the city's main gathering place since Munich was founded in 1158. It's where everything starts and where all distances from the city are measured.

The square was originally a market, first called "Markth" and later "Schranne" (grain market), before being renamed Marienplatz on October 9, 1854, after the Mariensaule, the golden column of the Virgin Mary erected at its centre in 1638. The column was built to celebrate the end of the Swedish occupation during the Thirty Years' War and was the first Marian column north of the Alps.

The dominant building on the square is the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus), a massive neo-Gothic structure built between 1867 and 1909. Its Glockenspiel, a carillon with 43 bells and 16 life-sized figures, performs daily at 11am and 12pm (and 5pm in summer). The figures re-enact two stories from Munich's history: the 1568 wedding of Duke Wilhelm V and a jousting tournament, as well as the Schafflertanz (coopers' dance), performed every seven years since 1517 to celebrate the end of plague.

The square is car-free and serves as the starting point for most explorations of Munich's Old Town. The Viktualienmarkt, Munich's famous open-air food market, is just a two-minute walk south.
