Sobre Clement Danes Church

St Clement Danes is one of London's most striking churches, standing alone on a traffic island in the middle of the Strand. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren and completed in 1682, it replaced a medieval church believed to have been founded by Danish settlers in the 9th century. The building was gutted by Luftwaffe bombing during the Blitz and carefully restored in 1958 as the central church of the Royal Air Force, with over 800 squadron badges set into the nave floor.

The church is also tied to one of London's most famous nursery rhymes. St Clement Danes is widely believed to be the church in "Oranges and Lemons," and the bells still play that tune every day at 9am, noon, 3pm, and 6pm. Inside you'll find a Grinling Gibbons pulpit, beautiful stained glass, and a quiet atmosphere that's easy to miss with the traffic rushing past outside. A statue of Samuel Johnson stands nearby — he was a regular worshipper here.

The location is ideal for exploring central London on foot. The Royal Courts of Justice sit just across the road, and a short walk takes you to Temple Church, Somerset House, Covent Garden, or Trafalgar Square. Twinings' original tea shop — open since 1706 — is steps away on the Strand. St Mary-le-Strand, the other "island church" in the middle of the road, stands just a block east.

With Questo, you can explore the hidden stories of the Strand and its surroundings through an interactive adventure. Follow clues, solve puzzles, and uncover centuries of history that most people rush past on the pavement. It's part scavenger hunt, part walking tour, and entirely self-guided so you can start whenever you like.
