Sobre Leeds City Museum

Leeds City Museum is the main local-history museum of Leeds, West Yorkshire, set in a Victorian building beside Millennium Square. Its galleries cover the city's story from prehistory to the present, and the collection includes an ancient Egyptian mummy and natural history displays. It is an easy, central stop for anyone who wants to understand how Leeds grew.

The story behind it

The building began life in the 1860s as the home of the Leeds Mechanics' Institution, a place of evening classes and lectures for working people in a fast-growing industrial town. It was designed by the Leeds architect Cuthbert Brodrick, who also designed the Corn Exchange and Leeds Town Hall's neighbour buildings in the city centre. Over the decades the hall served other cultural uses before being converted into a museum.

The museum itself has older roots. Leeds had a civic collection long before this building, and much of its material comes from the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society, whose museum was a pillar of Victorian learning in the city. The present museum opened to the public in 2008 and brought the collection back into the middle of town. Its best-known resident is Nesyamun, an Egyptian priest whose mummy and coffin have been in Leeds for two centuries.

What to look for

  • Look at the sturdy stone front of the building from Cookridge Street and Millennium Square, and notice how the Victorian architecture sits beside the open modern square.
  • Seek out the Egyptian gallery and the mummy of Nesyamun, one of the museum's best-loved displays.
  • Step into the central hall and look up, where the old building's grand scale is still easy to feel.
  • Follow the Leeds story galleries to see how wool, cloth and industry shaped the city and the people who lived in it.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow about 1 to 2 hours inside, longer if you like to read every label or have children with you.
  • Entry to the main galleries has generally been free, but special exhibitions can differ, so check current opening hours and details before you go.
  • Go on a weekday morning for a quieter visit, since school groups and families fill the museum at busy times.
  • Millennium Square, Leeds Civic Hall, Leeds Town Hall and the Art Gallery on The Headrow are all a short walk away, so you can pair the museum with an hour or two of city centre sightseeing.

See it on a quest
