Sobre Memorial Park
Memorial Park is a riverside green space in the Riverside neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida, created in the 1920s to honor local people who died in the First World War. It sits along the St. Johns River and is one of the city's most graceful public spaces, with open lawn, old trees and a central bronze sculpture.
The story behind it
The park was laid out in the years after the First World War, when communities across the United States were looking for ways to remember the fallen. Jacksonville chose a living memorial instead of a single monument: a park where residents could walk, sit and look out over the water. It was dedicated in 1924 and has stayed a neighborhood favorite ever since.
Its centerpiece is a bronze statue titled Life, the work of sculptor Charles Keck. The figure rises above a fountain pool, and the idea behind it is that a memorial to the dead can also celebrate the lives that continue. The park sits on a stretch of Riverside Avenue lined with old oaks and historic houses, so it feels like part of the neighborhood rather than a separate attraction.
What to look for
- Look at the bronze statue Life near the middle of the park and notice how the figure is set against the sky and the fountain below it.
- Walk to the riverside edge and take in the view across the St. Johns River, which is the reason the park was placed here.
- Check the memorial inscriptions and plaques around the grounds, which explain who the park honors and why it was built.
- Notice the mature oak trees and the broad lawn, which give the park a shaded, open feel that is typical of Riverside.
Tips for your visit
- Plan on 20 to 30 minutes for the park itself, longer if you want to sit by the water or take photographs.
- Go in the morning or late afternoon, when the light on the river is soft and the heat is easier to handle.
- It is an outdoor public park, so there is no building to enter. Check current park hours and any event closures before you go.
- Pair it with a walk through the surrounding Riverside streets, where historic homes, shops and cafes are within easy reach of the park.
