Sobre Pykenham's Gatehouse

Pykenham's Gatehouse is a red brick gatehouse on Northgate Street in Ipswich, built in the late 15th century for William Pykenham, Archdeacon of Suffolk. It is one of the finest surviving medieval brick buildings in the town, and it still works as a grand front door to the grounds behind it.

The story behind it

William Pykenham was a senior churchman, and his residence in Ipswich was the Archdeacon's House. The gatehouse was added to that existing estate around 1471, and it was built to impress anyone arriving at the door of a man of his standing. More than five centuries later it still does.

The buildings have had different lives since. The Ipswich Building Preservation Trust uses the gatehouse as its headquarters, while the Archdeacon's House next to it has been renovated and updated over the years and is occupied by the Ipswich and Suffolk Club.

What to look for

  • The large arched gateway, which gives the building the look of a small fortified entrance rather than a simple garden door.
  • The warm red brickwork of the street front, a good reminder of how much brick was used for status buildings in East Anglia.
  • The way the gatehouse sits in front of the Archdeacon's House, so you can read the two as one estate even though they now have different owners.
  • The contrast between this quiet medieval corner and the busier modern streets of the town around it.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow ten to fifteen minutes to look at the gatehouse from the street and take photographs.
  • Morning or late afternoon light is kind to brickwork, and the street tends to be calmer outside peak shopping hours.
  • The building is used as an office, so do not assume you can go inside. Check current opening hours and any public access before you go.
  • Northgate Street is an easy walk from the town centre, so you can combine it with other old buildings and churches nearby.
