Sobre Helumoa

Helumoa is the historic royal estate in Waikiki, Honolulu, where the Royal Hawaiian Hotel now stands along Kalākaua Avenue. Its name means "chicken scratch", and it belonged to Hawaiian chiefs and kings long before it became a resort district. The legend of a magical rooster, a famous coconut grove and a royal residence make it one of the most storied pieces of ground in Waikiki.

The story behind it

Tradition says the name comes from a supernatural rooster called Ka'auhelemoa, which flew from Palolo Valley to Waikiki and challenged a descendant of the Ma'ilikukahi line by scratching at the ground. The place was named Helumoa after that scratching. The chief Kakuhihewa is said to have taken the rooster's appearance as an omen and planted a grove of coconut trees here. The grove is remembered as having grown to some 10,000 trees.

The land later became a royal home. Kamehameha I had a residence here, and after his death the property passed to Princess Ruth Ke'elikolani, who left it to Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. It then became part of the Bishop Estate, the endowment of Kamehameha Schools, which still owns the land today. The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, opened in 1927 and known for its pink walls, now occupies a large part of the old estate.

What to look for

  • The pink facade of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, which stands on the old royal grounds and is easy to spot from Kalākaua Avenue.
  • Coconut palms around the hotel and the neighbouring shopping center, a reminder of the grove that once covered this stretch of Waikiki.
  • The line of the beach in front of the hotel, which shows how close the royal estate sat to the shore.
  • Any signs or markers that mention the name Helumoa, which let you connect the modern streets to the old land.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 20 to 30 minutes to look around the grounds and read the story, longer if you stop at the beach or the hotel.
  • Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when Kalākaua Avenue is cooler and less crowded.
  • The area is in the middle of Waikiki, so Waikiki Beach, shops and cafes are within a short walk.
  • Public areas are usually easy to walk through, but check current access and opening hours for the hotel itself.
