Sobre Stockbridge Market Arch
Stockbridge Market Arch stands on St Stephen Place in Stockbridge, Edinburgh, and is tied to the market building that architect Archibald Scott designed in 1825. It is a small but telling reminder of when local people bought their food in a covered market beside their own tenement homes.
The story behind it
Edinburgh has a long habit of weekend markets, and Stockbridge had one of its own. In 1825 Archibald Scott built a structure here to hold a number of market stalls, giving the residents of the neighbouring tenements a more permanent place to shop than an open street pitch.
Do not picture an elegant shopping arcade. The stalls sold fruit, fish, meat and poultry, all in the days before refrigeration, so the market must have been a smelly place on a warm day. The market is long gone from this building, and Stockbridge still has a weekend market nearby today, with stalls ranging from soaps to street food.
What to look for
- Look at the arch itself and how it opens through the building, a reminder that this was a working passage for shoppers and traders.
- Notice how the building sits among the tenement homes it was meant to serve, which shows how closely daily life and trade were packed together here.
- Take in the address on St Stephen Place and the mix of shopfronts around it, which give Stockbridge its village feel within the city.
- Think about the stalls that once stood here and compare them with the food and craft stalls of the present-day market nearby.
Tips for your visit
- You can see the arch from the street, so there is nothing to book and a short stop of ten to fifteen minutes is plenty.
- Visit on a weekend if you can, so you can pair the arch with the modern Stockbridge market, and check current market days before you go.
- Stockbridge rewards slow wandering, with independent shops, cafes and the Water of Leith close by, so leave extra time to explore.
- The arch is part of the street, so it is best enjoyed from outside rather than as a place to go into.
See it on a quest
The arch is a stop on Romantic Edinburgh: True Love Escape Game, a self-guided walk with a romantic theme. You reach the arch on foot as one stop in a longer route through the area, the app tells you about the place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle right in front of what you are looking at. There is no guide and no group to join, so you can start whenever suits you. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group.
