Built in 1828 by convict labor, the Old Windmill is Queensland's oldest surviving building and one of Australia's most fascinating monuments to failure turned innovation. Despite being placed on a prime hilltop with excellent wind exposure, the windmill was so poorly designed that it never actually caught the breeze properly.

Rather than tearing it down, authorities found a far darker use for it. Up to 25 convicts at a time were forced onto a manually powered treadmill, treading steps for 14 hours daily while clutching an overhead rail to grind grain by sheer human effort. The Moreton Bay penal settlement was one of Australia's harshest, and the treadmill became one of its most dreaded punishments.

After grain grinding ceased in 1845, the Old Windmill began an astonishing series of second lives. It served as a survey station, a shipping signal tower, the Queensland Museum's first home, an official timekeeping device for the settlement, and a research site for wireless radio and telephony. In 1934, it even hosted Queensland's first television broadcast demonstration.

Inside, five floors spiral around a central hexagonal staircase leading to an observation deck. Tiny windows just below the deck flood the top floor with light and give the building a distinctive silhouette against the Brisbane skyline.
