Sobre New York State Capitol
The New York State Capitol in Albany, New York, is the seat of the state legislature and a landmark of 19th-century American architecture. Completed in 1899 after more than three decades of construction, it stands at the top of State Street and is built on a grand scale, in granite and with a mix of architectural styles. It is a good place to start understanding how New York is governed.
The story behind it
Work on the Capitol began in 1867 and continued, with changes of architects and design, until 1899. The result is a building that blends several styles rather than following a single plan, which is part of its character.
The Capitol also has a dramatic chapter. In the early hours of 29 March 1911, a fire broke out in the Assembly library. The cause was never established. The night watchman, Samuel Abbott, was the only person killed, and the State Library lost hundreds of thousands of books and manuscripts. What survived was rehoused across the avenue in the State Education Building, whose long colonnade of 36 columns now fronts the collections that were rebuilt after the fire.
What to look for
- The sheer mass of the exterior, where the granite walls and the mixture of styles show how long the building took to finish.
- The grand carved staircases inside, which are among the most admired features of the building if you join a tour.
- The view across Capitol Park and down State Street, which shows how the Capitol was set at the head of the old city.
- The long colonnade of the State Education Building opposite, with its row of 36 columns, a reminder of where the rescued library and museum collections went after 1911.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the exterior and the park, or longer if you join an interior tour. Check current tour availability and opening hours before you go.
- Expect security screening if you go inside, and bring photo identification just in case.
- Morning light is good for photographing the front, and the park is pleasant on a fine afternoon.
- The Education Building and Capitol Park are right next to it, and the Empire State Plaza is a short walk away, so you can combine several sights in one outing.
