O The New Church
The New Church (Nieuwe Kerk) stands on Kerkplein in the heart of Zierikzee, a historic port town in Zeeland. It was built after a fire destroyed the great medieval church that once stood here, and its calm, temple-like look is unusual for a Dutch Protestant church. Right beside it, the tall old tower is a reminder of what was lost.
The story behind it
Before the New Church there was an old church on this spot, one of the large churches of the region and far bigger than the building that replaced it. In 1832 it was badly damaged after workers soldering the roof gutters set the roof alight, and the fire burned the roof away. Although some of the monumental interior could have been saved, the ruined church was not rebuilt and the remains were cleared.
The tower survived because it stood apart from the main body of the church. A new church was built on part of the old site in the following decades. Rather than copying the Gothic style of its predecessor, the builders chose a neoclassical design that resembles a Greek temple, which makes it stand out among the older buildings of Zierikzee.
What to look for
- Look at the pavement of the square, where the outline of the much larger old church is still marked, and imagine how far its walls once reached.
- Notice the classical front of the New Church, with its clean lines and temple-like proportions, so different from the brick Gothic buildings around it.
- Compare the size of the New Church with the old tower beside it, and you will see how much smaller the replacement is than the church it followed.
- Walk around the tower and look up: its separate position is the reason it came through the fire of 1832.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about 15 to 30 minutes to see the exterior, the square and the marked outline of the old church.
- Check current opening hours and access if you want to go inside, as a working church may not always be open to visitors.
- Soft morning or late afternoon light shows off the classical facade and makes the best photographs.
- The square sits in the old centre, so the harbour, the market area and the town's other historic buildings are an easy walk away.
See it on a quest
The New Church is one stop on Historic Highlights of Zierikzee: Time-travel with Cristóbal de Mondragón, a self-guided walk through the old town. You reach the church on foot as part of a longer route, the app tells you about the place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. It is a good way to take in the square and the streets around it at your own pace, with no guide and no group to join. One ticket covers the whole group.
