O The Black Whale
The Black Whale is a stop on Kalverringdijk in Zaandam, in the Zaan region north of Amsterdam. The name points to the area's whaling past, when the Zaanstreek was one of the Netherlands' whaling centres alongside Amsterdam, and the stories around it make a good introduction to how the region lived and worked.
The story behind it
The Zaan region built much of its wealth on trade and industry along the water, and whaling was part of that. Ships sailing out to hunt whales needed food that would last for months, and that is where the ship's biscuit comes in. Scheepsbeschuit was a hard, twice-baked cake of dough, made for shelf life rather than taste.
Bakeries that supplied the whaling fleets worked with a real fire risk, since their buildings and flour dust burned easily. Today ship's biscuit is rarely made, but its softer relative, regular beschuit, is still part of Dutch life. It is traditionally eaten with muisjes, aniseed seeds coated in sugar, to celebrate the birth of a child.
What to look for
- Notice the name over the door or on the sign and think about how the whaling trade shaped the language and street life of the region.
- Look at how the street runs along the dike, a reminder that life here has always followed the water.
- Watch for the traditional green wooden buildings typical of the Zaan area, which stand out against the flat landscape.
- Keep an eye out for beschuit and muisjes in local shops, a small taste of the story of ship's biscuits.
Tips for your visit
- Plan about 15 to 20 minutes here if you only want to look around, longer if you pair it with the surrounding streets.
- Morning or late afternoon usually gives softer light and fewer crowds in this part of Zaandam.
- Check current opening hours before you go if you hope to step inside, as they can change.
- The area is easy to explore on foot, so wear comfortable shoes and allow time to wander along the dike.
See it on a quest

You reach it on foot as one stop of a longer route through the area, and the app tells you about each place as you arrive. At each stop you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so you look closely instead of just walking past. One ticket covers the whole group, and you can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no set departure time.
