O Plac solny
Plac Solny (Salt Square) is a historic square in Wrocław, just off the southwest corner of the Market Square. For centuries it was a place of trade, and today it is best known for its flower stalls, some of which have long been open day and night. It is a short, colourful stop between the Rynek and the streets of the Old Town.
The story behind it
The name comes from the salt trade. In medieval Wrocław, salt was a valuable commodity, and the square beside the main market was a natural place to buy and sell it. Trade has been part of the square's identity ever since, and the name has survived many changes in the city's rulers and language.
In the German period, when the city was called Breslau, the square was known as Blücherplatz, after the Prussian field marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher. On its edge stands the Old Stock Exchange, a neoclassical building from the early 19th century designed by Carl Ferdinand Langhans, a reminder that this was long a commercial heart of the city.
What to look for
- The flower stalls that fill much of the square, a tradition that gives Plac Solny its scent and colour in every season.
- The Old Stock Exchange, whose restrained neoclassical facade stands out against the older gabled houses nearby.
- The mix of architecture around the square's edges, where townhouses from different centuries stand side by side.
- The view back toward the Market Square, which shows how closely the square is tied to the main medieval market.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 15 to 30 minutes for the square itself, longer if you want to browse the flower stalls or sit at a nearby cafe.
- Morning is pleasant and photogenic when the stalls are freshly stocked, while evening is calmer and the surrounding buildings look good in the low light.
- The square is an open public space, so there is nothing to book. Individual shops and venues around it keep their own hours, so check current opening hours.
- The Market Square, the Town Hall and the main Old Town streets are only a few minutes away on foot, so it is easy to combine with a wider walk.
