O Merchant Square
Merchant Square is a pedestrian-friendly shopping and dining district at the western end of Duke of Gloucester Street in Williamsburg, Virginia, beside the Historic Area of Colonial Williamsburg. It grew out of the same 20th century restoration effort that rebuilt the colonial capital, which makes it a natural place to begin or end a walk through the town.
The story behind it
The look of this part of Williamsburg comes from the restoration led by John D. Rockefeller Jr., the American financier and philanthropist who funded the work in the early 1900s. The idea came from Rev. Dr. W. A. R. Goodwin, who is credited with stirring up the interest and the money to make it happen. Over 500 buildings were restored or reconstructed, and only 88 of the original structures were kept.
The project was planned with care, and architectural decisions leaned on documentation of what had stood there before. The result is a town where the past is part of daily life. Even today, people still live in buildings off Duke of Gloucester Street.
What to look for
- The Colonial Revival style of the shopfronts, which echoes the brick and white trim of the restored buildings in the nearby Historic Area.
- The start of Duke of Gloucester Street, where the commercial district meets the colonial streetscape and you can see how the two blend.
- The spires and rooftops of the surrounding town, a reminder of how much was rebuilt to match the colonial originals.
- The mix of independent shops, cafes and restaurants set around open pedestrian spaces, good for a slow look before you set off.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 30 to 60 minutes to wander the shops and grab a coffee, longer if you plan to eat a meal here.
- Morning and late afternoon are the calmest times, and the light on the brick is at its best in the evening.
- The streets are open to stroll, but check current opening hours for individual shops and restaurants.
- The College of William and Mary and the Historic Area are both a short walk away, so it works well as a first or last stop.
See it on a quest
On Williamsburg Colonial Adventure - A Trip Through American History (PART 1), you reach Merchant Square on foot as one stop of a longer route through the area. The app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so you look at the buildings and streets properly instead of walking past them. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no group to join.
