O Vidin synagogue

The Vidin synagogue is a late 19th century Jewish house of worship in Vidin, a Danube town in northwest Bulgaria. It was opened in 1894 to replace an earlier building and served the city's large Jewish community until the middle of the 20th century. Today it stands weathered and unused, a striking reminder of a vanished chapter of the town's life.

The story behind it

Vidin had a sizeable Jewish population in the 19th century, and the community's earlier synagogue was lost in the fighting of 1878, at the end of the Russo-Turkish war that led to Bulgarian liberation. Rebuilding was a shared effort. Local Jews gave generously, and donations also came from Jewish communities elsewhere in Bulgaria.

The new synagogue was inaugurated on 28 September 1894 in a ceremony led by Mordechai Grunwald, the chief rabbi of Bulgaria. It was one of the major synagogues in the country and a source of pride for the town. In 1950 it stopped being used as a place of worship and was turned into a warehouse. In the decades since, the building has fallen into poor repair.

What to look for

  • Notice the sheer scale of the building: it was designed to hold a large congregation, and it still stands out among the surrounding streets.
  • Look closely at the facade and windows, where the marks of age and neglect sit beside the remains of the original design.
  • Take in the contrast between the building's former role as the centre of a thriving community and its quiet, empty state today.
  • Glance at the neighbouring streets of old Vidin, which show how closely the synagogue was woven into the town around it.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow about 15 to 30 minutes for the synagogue itself, longer if you pair it with a walk through the centre.
  • Daylight is best, since the details of the facade are easier to see, and the light is softer in the morning or late afternoon.
  • The building is mostly appreciated from the outside. Access to the interior can change, so check locally before you plan around going in.
  • It is easy to combine with other sights in Vidin, including the Danube riverside and the Baba Vida fortress, all reachable on foot or a short ride.
