O Place de la Trinité
Place de la Trinité is a neoclassical square in the centre of Toulouse, laid out in the 1820s and centred on a decorative fountain. It is a small, calm stop close to the Capitole, and a good example of the city's early 19th-century town planning.
The story behind it
The square was built between 1824 and 1826 to a design by Urbain Vitry, an architect who left a strong mark on Toulouse in this period. The fountain at its centre was ornamented by the Parisian sculptor Alexandre Romagnési. The name comes from a Trinitarian convent that once stood nearby and had disappeared by the 18th century, so the square keeps the memory of a building that is long gone.
The fountain was one of the first large public fountains the city asked for, and it has remained the focal point of the square ever since. It is protected today as a historic monument.
What to look for
- The fountain itself, with its sculpted figures supporting the basin, is the main attraction and rewards a slow walk all the way around it.
- The mermaid figures are the details that most visitors miss at first glance, so look closely at how they hold up the basin.
- The harmonious frontages around the square reflect the planned, orderly style of the 1820s, quite different from the older brick lanes nearby.
- Notice how the square works as a pause in the street plan, a place where people sit, meet and watch the surroundings.
Tips for your visit
- It is an open-air public square, so you can see it at any time and it costs nothing to look around.
- Ten to fifteen minutes is enough for the fountain and the facades, longer if you stop at a café terrace.
- Late afternoon light is flattering on the stonework and the water, and the square is often livelier then.
- The Place du Capitole is a short walk away, so it fits easily into a wider stroll through the old centre.
