Piazza IX Aprile, Taormina — Visitor Guide & Things to Do Nearby
O Piazza IX Aprile
Piazza IX Aprile sits at the heart of Taormina, halfway between the two ancient gates of Porta Messina and Porta Catania along the Corso Umberto. Its name commemorates a moment of mistaken joy. On April 9, 1860, during mass in the cathedral, rumors swept through the congregation that Giuseppe Garibaldi had arrived in Marsala to begin Sicily's liberation from Bourbon rule. The townspeople were so ecstatic that they renamed the square on the spot. Garibaldi actually landed a month later, on May 9, but the name stuck.
Before 1860, this was Piazza Sant'Agostino, named after a church built in 1448 on the eastern side. That church has since been deconsecrated and now serves as the town's public library.
The square is famous for one of Sicily's most spectacular views. From the terrace, the azure waters of the Ionian Sea stretch out before you while Mount Etna dominates the skyline to the south. The combination of Mediterranean blue and volcanic drama has been drawing visitors for centuries.
The Torre dell'Orologio (Clock Tower), originally built in the 12th century and rebuilt multiple times after earthquakes, anchors one side of the piazza. The 17th-century Church of San Giuseppe adds Sicilian Baroque elegance to the other.
Whether you are sipping coffee at one of the terrace cafes or simply standing at the railing watching Etna smoke in the distance, Piazza IX Aprile delivers one of Italy's great piazza experiences. A Questo quest through Taormina makes this square even more rewarding, adding stories and challenges that bring its layers of history to life.
