O Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis
The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Louis, standing on Lindell Boulevard in the Central West End of St. Louis, Missouri. It is a Byzantine-Romanesque church best known for its interior covered in mosaics, which rank among the largest collections of mosaic art in the world. Even if you only have a few minutes, it is one of the most striking rooms in the city.
The story behind it
Construction of the cathedral began in 1907, and the building was consecrated in 1926. It replaced an earlier cathedral downtown and was designed to serve a growing city moving west toward Forest Park. The exterior is built of solid granite in a restrained Romanesque style, with a tall dome and bell tower that make it easy to spot from the surrounding streets.
The real drama is inside. Artists worked for decades to cover the walls, arches and dome with glass tile mosaics, a project that stretched across much of the twentieth century. In 1997 the church was given the title of basilica, and in 1999 Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral during his trip to St. Louis.
What to look for
- Look up into the central dome and the vaults, where gold-toned mosaics fill the space with light and color.
- Walk the side chapels and notice how each one tells its own scenes and stories in tiny pieces of glass.
- Step back outside on the Lindell side to take in the granite walls, the rounded arches and the sweep of the dome against the sky.
- Pay attention to the scale of the nave, which feels especially large after the leafy residential streets around it.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 30 to 45 minutes to see the interior properly, longer if you like to study art up close.
- Visit in daylight, when natural light brings out the gold and color in the mosaics.
- The cathedral is a working church, so be quiet during services and check current opening hours and visiting rules before you go.
- The Central West End has cafes and restaurants within walking distance, and Forest Park is close by for a longer stroll.
