The Lutheran Cathedral of St. Mary is the largest Gothic church in Transylvania and one of the defining landmarks of Sibiu's skyline. Its 73-metre tower has watched over the city for more than 500 years. The church was built in stages between the 14th and 16th centuries, replacing an earlier Romanesque basilica on the same site. The current form is a late Gothic hall church with three naves of equal height, a design that gives the interior a spacious, airy feel. The tower was completed in 1530 and capped with four small turrets at the corners, a signal in medieval Transylvania that the city had the right to impose capital punishment. Inside, the cathedral holds one of the largest organs in Southeast Europe, with over 6,000 pipes. The original organ dates to the 18th century and has been expanded over time. The church also contains a remarkable collection of Anatolian rugs, donated by Saxon merchants who traded with the Ottoman Empire. These rugs, some dating to the 15th century, are among the largest such collections in any European church. The cathedral was the centre of religious life for Sibiu's Saxon German community, which settled in Transylvania in the 12th century at the invitation of the Hungarian king. The community thrived for centuries before most emigrated to Germany after 1989.
