O Monument Avenue
Monument Avenue is a wide, tree-lined boulevard in Richmond, Virginia, planned in the late 1880s as a showpiece residential street and now a National Historic Landmark district. It is known for its grand early twentieth century houses, its landscaped median, and for the national conversation about memory and public art that played out along it in recent years.
The story behind it
The avenue began with a statue. Richmond unveiled a large monument to Robert E. Lee in 1890 on open land west of the city, and the street was laid out around it as a stately address for the city's growing neighbourhoods. More Confederate monuments followed in the decades after, set at intersections along the median, and handsome Beaux Arts, Colonial Revival and Victorian style houses filled in the blocks on either side.
In 1996 the avenue gained a different kind of monument, a statue of the tennis champion Arthur Ashe, who was born in Richmond. In 2020 the Confederate monuments came down, and the Lee statue was removed in 2021, which left the avenue with a very different skyline from the one earlier generations knew. Today it is a place where Richmond's history is visible and still being debated.
What to look for
- The width of the boulevard itself, with its grassy median and mature trees, which shows how ambitious the original plan was.
- The statue of Arthur Ashe, a tribute to a Richmond native that has stood on the avenue since 1996.
- The empty or reworked circles and intersections where large monuments once stood, which tell the recent story as clearly as the old one.
- The mix of architectural styles in the houses and churches along the route, with details such as porches, columns and brickwork that reward a slow look.
Tips for your visit
- The avenue is a public street, so it is free to walk and there is nothing to book. Allow an hour or more if you want to stroll several blocks and look at the houses.
- Morning and late afternoon light are kind to the trees and the facades, and the shade makes a summer walk more comfortable.
- The Fan District sits alongside the avenue, so cafes, restaurants and more residential streets are close by when you want a break.
- The houses are private homes and the monuments are outdoors, so you view everything from the pavement. Check current opening hours for any churches or museums you plan to visit nearby.
