Journey into Imagination with Figment is a family dark ride in the Imagination pavilion at EPCOT, part of Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida. It follows Figment, a small purple dragon who stands for creativity and curiosity, and it has been one of the park's best-loved gentle rides since EPCOT's early years.

The story behind it

The ride opened with EPCOT in the early 1980s as Journey into Imagination. Its mascot, Figment, was dreamed up by Disney Imagineers, and his name is a pun on the phrase figment of the imagination. A small dragon with horns, wings and a mischievous grin, he quickly became a fan favourite, and Disney has returned to him many times in parks merchandise and other attractions.

The ride has been reworked more than once over the decades, and Figment's role has shifted with each version. The current ride bears his name and keeps the idea at the heart of the pavilion: that imagination turns ordinary things into something playful and surprising.

What to look for

• The glass pyramids on the pavilion's exterior, which make the building easy to spot among the other buildings around the World Showcase side of the park.
• The fountains in front of the entrance, where jets of water arc through the air in a way that feels a little like a toy.
• Figment himself, who appears in the ride and in small touches around the pavilion, so keep an eye out for his purple head and tiny wings.
• The colourful, whimsical scenes inside the ride, built around the senses and the idea of creative play rather than a single plot.
