The Fox opened in 1928 as a lavish movie palace designed by the architects Weeks and Day, with more than 3,000 seats. By the mid 1970s the building was in bad shape, and the city considered buying it and clearing the site for a parking lot. That plan fell through, and the Fox later gained city landmark status, though it stayed dark for years. The city's Redevelopment Agency bought it in 1996, and a long restoration followed, costing about $75 million. The Fox finally reopened in 2009 with a concert by Social Distortion.
