Bow Bridge, New York City — Visitor Guide & Things to Do Nearby
O Bow Bridge
Bow Bridge is the most photographed bridge in Central Park and one of the most romantic spots in New York City. Its graceful cast-iron arch spans the Lake, connecting Cherry Hill to the Ramble.
The bridge was designed by Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould and completed in 1862, as part of the original Central Park plan by Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted. At 87 feet, it is the longest bridge in the park and was built by Janes, Kirtland & Co., the same Bronx foundry that constructed the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty.
Bow Bridge is the second-oldest cast-iron bridge in the United States. Its design, a sweeping arc that resembles the bow of a violin (or an archer's bow, depending on whom you ask), was deliberately elegant. The decorative railings feature interlocking circles, and the bridge was originally painted white to stand out against the surrounding greenery.
The bridge has become famous through films: it appeared in scenes from "Spider-Man 3," "Keeping the Faith," and countless romantic comedies. It's one of the most popular proposal spots in Manhattan.
The views from the bridge are exceptional: the San Remo towers to the northwest, the Bethesda Fountain to the south, and the wild tangle of the Ramble to the north. In autumn, the surrounding trees create a canopy of colour reflected in the Lake.
Bow Bridge is free to visit and accessible during Central Park hours. If you're on a Questo quest through Central Park, it's a stop where engineering meets beauty in the middle of Manhattan's green heart.
