O Loring Park
Loring Park is a public park in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, built around a small lake and ringed by apartment towers, churches and arts venues. It dates to the 1880s, when the city set aside green space close to the center, and it is still one of the most enjoyable places to walk in the city. It is free to enter and open to everyone.
The story behind it
Minneapolis began acquiring the land for the park in the 1880s, as the young city grew quickly and its park board chose to protect open ground instead of covering every parcel with buildings. The park was first called Central Park and was later renamed in honor of Charles M. Loring, the first president of the park board. That early choice paid off. The neighborhood around the park is now dense with high-rises and busy streets, and the green space has become a rare calm spot in the middle of downtown.
Over the years the park has become a gathering place for the surrounding neighborhood. People walk the paths around the water, sit on the lawns, and watch geese and ducks near the shore. Seasons change its character a great deal, from spring ducklings to bright summer plantings to quiet, snowy winters.
What to look for
- The lake at the heart of the park, where the paths circle the water and give you views back toward the downtown skyline.
- Waterbirds such as geese and ducks near the shore, which are easy to spot on a slow lap of the lake.
- The statue of the Norwegian violinist Ole Bull, which stands in the park and reflects the city's Scandinavian heritage.
- The contrast between old trees and the towers rising behind them, which is best seen from the open lawn along the water.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 30 to 60 minutes for an easy loop of the park, longer if you want to sit by the water or take photographs.
- Late morning and early evening are pleasant times to visit, when the paths are lively but not crowded.
- The park is close to other well known Minneapolis sights, including the Walker Art Center and Sculpture Garden, so it combines well with a longer walk.
- Bring layers in cooler months, as the open ground by the water can feel windy. The park is outdoors and free to enter, so you can go any time you like.
