O Arkansas State Capitol
The Arkansas State Capitol is the seat of state government in Little Rock, Arkansas, and home to the governor's office and the legislature. Its white limestone neoclassical building, topped with a gilded dome, was modeled on the United States Capitol in Washington. It sits on a rise at the head of Capitol Avenue and is one of the best-known landmarks in the city.
The story behind it
Arkansas outgrew its earlier statehouse, the Old State House on the riverfront, and construction of a new capitol began in 1899. The site was the former state penitentiary grounds, a short distance west of downtown. The first architect was George R. Mann, and Cass Gilbert, better known for other landmark buildings, later took over the design. The building was in use well before the final work wrapped up in 1915.
The grounds are as much a part of the story as the building. Monuments and memorials around the Capitol record parts of the state's history, including the Little Rock Nine Monument, which honors the nine Black students who integrated Central High School in 1957.
What to look for
- The dome, covered in gold, which catches the sun and makes the Capitol easy to spot from across downtown.
- The pale limestone exterior and the columned neoclassical front, which clearly echo the United States Capitol.
- The Little Rock Nine Monument on the grounds, a quiet and moving place to stop and read.
- The view down Capitol Avenue toward downtown Little Rock, best from the front steps.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 30 to 45 minutes for the exterior and grounds, and longer if you go inside for a look at the rotunda and public areas.
- The Capitol is a working government building, so check current opening hours and any security procedures before you go.
- Morning light is good for photographs of the front facade, and the grounds are pleasant on a mild afternoon.
- Combine it with the downtown core and the Old State House, which are a short drive or a longer walk away.
See it on a quest
The Capitol is one of the places you reach on foot on Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Little Rock. This is a self-guided walk with a mystery theme, so you move from place to place at your own pace. The app tells you about each stop as you arrive and sets a puzzle based on what is in front of you, which makes you look at the building and its surroundings more closely than a quick photo stop would. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group, so it suits families and friends travelling together. There is no guide to meet and no set start time.
