O Liberty Bridge

Liberty Bridge is a curved pedestrian suspension bridge in Falls Park on the Reedy, in downtown Greenville, South Carolina. It carries walkers in a gentle arc above the Reedy River falls and gives one of the best views in the city, so it is the natural centrepiece of any walk through Greenville's historic core.

The story behind it

The Reedy River is the reason Greenville grew where it did. Its falls supplied power for mills in the 19th century, and for decades the riverbank was an industrial edge of town rather than a place to stroll. A road bridge crossed the river here and largely hid the falls from view.

The city later reclaimed the riverbank as a public park and opened the pedestrian bridge in 2004. Instead of blocking the view, it was built to show off the water. The deck bends in a graceful curve and hangs from a single cable, so the falls stay in sight the whole way across. It has become the postcard image of modern Greenville.

What to look for

  • The sweeping curve of the deck, which hangs from a single cable on one side rather than crossing the river in a straight line.
  • The Reedy River falls directly below, best seen from the middle of the span, where the water drops over rock ledges.
  • The view back toward the downtown skyline and the green slopes of Falls Park around you.
  • The wooden walking surface and the way the bridge gives slightly underfoot when many people cross at once.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the bridge and the nearby overlooks, or longer if you want to wander the park's gardens and paths.
  • Morning is quieter, while late afternoon and early evening give softer light for photographs.
  • The bridge is an open-air public space and you walk across it freely. Check for any temporary closures before you go.
  • Main Street is close by, with cafes, restaurants and shops, so it is easy to pair the bridge with a longer stroll downtown.
