O Schiller Park
Schiller Park is a public park in the German Village neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio, named after the German poet and playwright Friedrich Schiller. It is a green, walkable space ringed by brick streets and small historic houses, and it is one of the best places in the city to get a feel for the neighborhood's German heritage.
The story behind it
Columbus itself was planned. In 1812 the Ohio government chose a spot beside the Scioto River and built a new capital there, naming it after Christopher Columbus. Government work drew educated newcomers, businesses followed, and The Ohio State University was founded in the city later on. Waves of German immigrants settled south of downtown, and the area around this park grew into the neighborhood now called German Village.
The park carries the name of Schiller, one of the best-known figures of German literature, as a nod to those settlers. A statue of him stands in the park, a reminder that the people who built this part of Columbus brought their culture with them.
What to look for
- The statue of Friedrich Schiller, which ties the park directly to the German community that shaped the neighborhood.
- The brick streets and compact historic houses around the park edges, which show how the surrounding blocks were laid out.
- The mature trees and open lawns, which make the park a natural gathering spot for locals walking, picnicking or relaxing.
- The street facing the park on South 3rd Street, where the neighborhood's shops and cafes begin.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the park itself, or longer if you want to wander the surrounding German Village streets.
- Morning and late afternoon are pleasant for a stroll, when the light falls nicely on the brick and the park is calm.
- It is an outdoor public park, so you can walk in freely. Check current details if you plan to attend any event held there.
- Cafes, bakeries and shops are close by on and around South 3rd Street, so it is easy to combine the park with a meal or coffee.
