O St. Lucia's Cathedral
St. Lucia's Cathedral is the main Roman Catholic cathedral in Colombo, Sri Lanka, standing in the district of Kotahena north of the Fort. Built by the city's Catholic community in the late 19th century, it grew out of a parish founded in 1760 and remains the spiritual centre of a neighbourhood shaped by many faiths.
The story behind it
The parish began in 1760, when Oratorian missionary priests founded it. Its first church was a modest building of wood and cadjan thatch, the plaited palm leaf roofing common across the island. By the middle of the 19th century a grander church was wanted, and a foundation stone was laid in 1852.
The first plan did not last. By the early 1870s the structure was in danger of collapsing, so the design was scrapped and a new one drawn up, with building starting in 1873. The cathedral was opened in 1887 and was paid for entirely by Colombo's Catholic community, which explains the pride locals still take in it. It is dedicated to St Lucy, the early Christian martyr of Syracuse.
What to look for
- The broad, columned front of the cathedral, a neoclassical composition that stands out against the busy streets of Kotahena.
- The statue of the dark-skinned Madonna known as Our Lady of Kotahena, a figure that is especially dear to local worshippers.
- The plaques and inscriptions near the entrance, which record the building's later milestones and reward a slow read.
- The scale of the interior compared with the lanes outside, a reminder of how much effort the community put into raising it.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the cathedral itself, and more if you want to see the surrounding streets of Kotahena.
- Visitors are generally welcome inside as long as services are not in progress, but check current opening hours and dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered.
- Morning or late afternoon light is gentler for photographing the facade, and it is also cooler for walking.
- Kotahena is full of other places of worship, so plan to explore on foot instead of treating the cathedral as a single stop.
See it on a quest
