O Cathedral Square
Cathedral Square is the central public square of Christchurch, New Zealand, and the point around which the city grew from its founding in the 1850s. It is named for the ChristChurch Cathedral that stands at its heart, and it has long been the place where locals meet, gather and watch the city go by.
The story behind it
Christchurch was planned as an English-style Anglican settlement, and the cathedral was meant to anchor it. Building began in the 1860s and carried on over several decades, producing a Gothic Revival landmark whose spire dominated the skyline. In February 2011 a powerful earthquake brought down the spire and left the building badly damaged. Since then the Square and the cathedral have been a visible symbol of the city's recovery, and the area around them has been steadily rebuilt.
The Square also belongs to a darker chapter of local history. In 1954 two Christchurch teenagers, Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme, killed Pauline's mother, Honorah Parker, in nearby Victoria Park, after fearing they would be separated. The case shocked New Zealand and later inspired the film Heavenly Creatures. It remains one of the country's best-known crimes, and it is the kind of story that gives a murder mystery walk through the centre its edge.
What to look for
- The cathedral itself, where you can see how the damaged Gothic Revival structure is being protected and reinstated.
- The Chalice, a tall sculpture by artist Neil Dawson, which stands in the Square as a modern counterpoint to the old stonework.
- The mix of old and new buildings around the edges, which shows how much of the central city has been rebuilt in recent years.
- The everyday life of the Square, from street performers to people crossing between the shops, cafes and tram stops nearby.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the Square on its own, longer if you want to linger over a coffee or look around the surrounding streets.
- Morning light is good for photographs of the cathedral, and the Square is generally quieter earlier in the day.
- The Square is an open public space, but access to the cathedral depends on its reinstatement work, so check current access and opening hours before you go.
- Victoria Park, the Avon River and the central city's trams and shops are all within easy reach, so it works well as the start of a longer walk.
