O Memorial Church
Memorial Church is the white-steepled church at the heart of Harvard Yard in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Completed in 1932, it honors the Harvard men and women who died in the First World War and has since become a memorial to those lost in later conflicts. It is a working place of worship and one of the most recognizable buildings on campus.
The story behind it
Harvard had a chapel on this ground long before the present building. Appleton Chapel went up in 1858 and served the university for decades. After the First World War, Harvard chose to create a larger, more lasting memorial to its war dead, and Memorial Church was built on the same spot. It was dedicated in 1932 on Armistice Day.
Inside, the names of Harvard's First World War dead are carved into the walls, more than 350 of them. Malvina Hoffman's sculpture The Sacrifice stands among them. The memorial later widened to include Harvard students who died in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Today the church is a non-denominational Protestant church that holds Sunday services. It also hosts interfaith gatherings, music and talks on the role of religion in public life.
What to look for
- Look at the tall white steeple and the columned front from the lawn. The church faces Widener Library across the open space of the Yard, and the two buildings frame each other.
- Find the carved names of the war dead inside. Reading them slowly makes the scale of the loss clear.
- Look for Malvina Hoffman's sculpture The Sacrifice, which sits within the memorial space and gives the room its emotional center.
- Notice how bright and plain the interior is. The simple, colonial-style design suits the Yard's red-brick surroundings.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 15 to 30 minutes to walk around the outside, step in quietly and read the memorial. Add time if you want to sit in the pews.
- Check current opening hours and the service schedule before you go. Visitors are expected to be respectful during services and rehearsals.
- Morning light is usually softer for photographs of the front. The Yard is also quieter before the midday crowds.
- The John Harvard statue, Widener Library, Sever Hall and Harvard Square are all a few minutes' walk away, so it is easy to combine them in one outing.
