O Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts
The Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts is a concrete building at 24 Quincy Street on the Harvard campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was designed by the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier and is the only building he completed in North America. It still houses Harvard's visual arts teaching and is one of the most distinctive modernist buildings in the city.
The story behind it
Harvard wanted a home for its growing visual arts programme in the 1950s, and it turned to Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, better known as Le Corbusier, one of the most celebrated architects in Europe. The building was completed in the early 1960s. It remains his only work in the United States, which is a large part of why architecture students and fans travel to see it.
Le Corbusier meant the building to encourage creativity as well as house it. The design is a piece of visual art in its own right, and it changes with where you stand. From one side it reads as grids and rectangles, from another as sweeping curves. The surrounding brick and colonial-style campus makes the contrast even sharper.
What to look for
- Look for the long ramp that curves up and through the middle of the building, a signature Le Corbusier idea that invites passers-by to walk through the structure.
- Notice the raw, textured concrete, which still shows the marks of the wooden forms it was poured into.
- Walk all the way around the building and compare the angular, gridded sides with the curved, sculptural ones.
- Check how the sunshades and window patterns on the facades break up the light and give each side a different rhythm.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 15 to 30 minutes to look at the exterior from several sides and walk the ramp if access is open.
- Soft daylight, late morning or afternoon, brings out the texture and shadows of the concrete.
- Check current opening hours and access before planning to go inside, as galleries and film screenings run on their own schedules.
- Harvard Yard and the nearby university museums are a short walk away, so it fits easily into a wider stroll around campus.
- If you are meeting friends here, name which side of the building you mean. It is easy to end up on opposite sides.
See it on a quest
The Carpenter Center is one stop on Harvard Undercover: The Porcellian Files, a self-guided walk through Harvard's streets with a secretive, undercover theme. You reach the building on foot as part of a longer route, the app tells you about it when you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. One ticket covers the whole group, and you can start whenever you like, with no guide and no set departure time.
