What is this Oz escape game?
It is an outdoor, escape-room-style game played on your phone. You join a team of misfits in a new story inspired by L. Frank Baum's original 1900 Oz novel and try to outsmart the witch by solving puzzles. Clues lead you to each new location, and original Oz-themed songs are in the app.
Where does the game start and finish?
It starts at the South Entrance of the Palace of Fine Arts and loops back there. Along the way you pass the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre, the Ocularium and the North Entrance, then streets around Divisadero, Broderick and Scott, and the corner of Bay and Baker.
How long does it take and how far is the walk?
Plan on around 90 minutes to cover about 2.5 km, though your pace depends on how quickly your team cracks the puzzles. You can pause at any point and continue later, so a coffee break or a stop to look around does not end the game.
Do we need to book a time slot, and can we play as a group?
There is no booking slot, so you can start whenever suits you. One ticket covers your whole group, and you solve the puzzles together as a team. You can also play solo and compete against other players on the leaderboard.
Is it outdoors, and what if it rains?
The whole game is played outdoors on the streets and grounds around the Palace of Fine Arts, so dress for the weather. If rain arrives partway through, you can pause the game and pick it up again later from where you stopped.
