Over Porte de la Cadène
Porte de la Cadène sits in the old centre of Saint-Émilion, a wine village in the Gironde near Bordeaux, a short walk from the Monolithic Church. It belongs to the maze of steep lanes and small squares that make up the UNESCO-listed Jurisdiction of Saint-Émilion, and it is a good place to read the medieval layers of the village in a few steps.
The story behind it
The streets around the Cadène are known locally as tertres. The word usually means a mound of earth, but in Saint-Émilion it describes the narrow, steep lanes with their uneven paving. A well-known local tradition says the cobbles came from England: boats arriving in Aquitaine used small stones as ballast, unloaded them on the shore and took on wine barrels instead. The village builders then reused the stones for their roads and footpaths.
The nearby square holds several older treasures. Close to the Monolithic Church stands the Trinity Chapel, built in the 13th century above a burial crypt. Legend says the crypt was the hermitage of Saint Émilion in the 8th century. Opposite is the Market Hall House, whose gothic arcades recall the village's medieval trading life. The House of Cadène, with its timber frame, is usually described as the last timber-framed house in the village. Its facade dates from the early 16th century, and its foundations are older.
What to look for
- The timber-framed facade of the House of Cadène, a rare sight among the village's stone buildings.
- The gothic arcades of the Market Hall House on the opposite corner of the square.
- The small cobbles underfoot in the tertres, and how steeply and unevenly they climb.
- The Trinity Chapel beside the Monolithic Church, and the way the square is tucked between these buildings.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the square and its surroundings, longer if you add the Monolithic Church.
- Wear shoes with a good grip. The lanes are steep and the paving is uneven, especially when wet.
- Early morning or late afternoon is calmer and gives softer light on the old stone and timber.
- The Trinity Chapel and crypt are visited together with the Monolithic Church on a combined tour. Check current opening hours and booking details before you go.
See it on a quest
The Saint Emilion: In the footsteps of Isaac Newton quest passes this corner of the village. You reach it on foot as one stop of a longer route through the area, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle in front of what you are looking at. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join.
