Over Iglesia de San Juan (Málaga)
The Iglesia de San Juan is a parish church in the historic centre of Málaga, on Calle San Juan. It is one of the city's oldest parishes, founded in the years after the Christian conquest of 1487, and its mix of Mudéjar, Gothic and Baroque touches shows how often it has been altered over the centuries.
The story behind it
When the Catholic Monarchs took Málaga in 1487, the city was reorganised into parishes, and San Juan was one of the first four. Like many early parish churches in Andalusia, it was built in a Gothic-Mudéjar manner, combining Christian structure with craftsmanship from the Moorish building tradition.
Málaga has been through earthquakes, fires and periods of unrest, and its churches have been repaired and reshaped many times. San Juan is no exception, which is why the building reads as layers of different periods rather than one single style. It remains an active parish, closely tied to the life of the old town around it.
What to look for
- Look up at the tower, which rises over the narrow street and shows how Mudéjar and Baroque taste were combined.
- Study the main doorway and the stonework around it, where you can read the different building phases of the church.
- If the church is open, notice the Baroque altarpieces and sacred images, which are part of Málaga's strong Holy Week tradition.
- Pay attention to the street setting itself: the church sits among tight lanes and small squares that give a sense of the old town's layout.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 15 to 30 minutes for the exterior and, if it is open, a quiet look inside.
- Check current opening hours and service times before you go, as visits inside are not possible during Mass.
- Go in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer and the streets are less crowded.
- It is a short walk from Plaza de la Constitución and Calle Larios, so it fits easily into a stroll through the centre. Dress modestly if you plan to enter.
