There's a popular story that Landseer used a dead lion from London Zoo as his model and took so long sculpting them that the body began to decompose, which is why the lions' paws look more like a cat's than a lion's.

The Palace Theatre is one of the most striking buildings on Cambridge Circus in London's West End, a grand red-brick and terracotta Victorian building that has been a landmark of London's theatre district since 1891.

Westminster Abbey is one of the most important religious buildings in the English-speaking world and the coronation church of the British monarchy for nearly 1,000 years.

The current Gothic church was largely built between 1245 and 1272 under King Henry III, though a Benedictine monastery has stood on this site since at least the 10th century. Edward the Confessor built the first great church here in 1065, just weeks before his death, and William the Conqueror was crowned in the abbey on Christmas Day 1066.

Every British monarch since William has been crowned here, with the sole exceptions of Edward V and Edward VIII. The Coronation Chair, made in 1296, sits inside the abbey and has been used at every coronation since 1308.

The abbey is also a burial place and memorial for over 3,300 people. Poets' Corner, in the south transept, commemorates Britain's greatest writers: Chaucer, Dickens, Hardy, Kipling, and many others. The nave holds the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, containing a soldier brought from France in 1920.

Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, and Stephen Hawking are all buried or memorialised here. The abbey also hosted 16 royal weddings, including that of the future Queen Elizabeth II in 1947 and William and Catherine in 2011.

Green Park is one of London's Royal Parks, a peaceful triangle of mature trees and open grassland sitting between Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly, and Constitution Hill. It's the simplest of the royal parks: no lakes, no flowerbeds, no fountains, just 47 acres of green space in the heart of the city.

The park was created by King Charles II in 1660 so he could walk from Hyde Park to St James's Park without leaving royal land. He surrounded it with a brick wall and it was originally called "Upper St James's Park." The name "The Green Park" became official in 1746.

There's a story behind the lack of flowers. One version claims that Charles II picked flowers here for another woman, and when his wife Catherine of Braganza found out, she ordered all the flowers in the park to be removed. Another version says the park was once a burial ground for lepers from the nearby hospital, and flowers wouldn't grow. Neither story is confirmed, but both are good.

The park was opened to the public in 1826 and redesigned by John Nash, the architect who also shaped Regent Street and Buckingham Palace. In earlier centuries, it was a popular duelling ground and a haunt for highwaymen.

Today, Green Park is a quiet escape between some of London's busiest areas. The Canada Memorial, a polished red granite monument, sits near the park's centre.

Buckingham Palace is the official London residence of the British monarch and one of the most recognized buildings in the world. It has been the administrative headquarters of the monarchy since Queen Victoria moved in on July 13, 1837.

The original house was built in 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham and was purchased by King George III in 1761 as a private residence for Queen Charlotte. Between 1825 and 1835, architect John Nash transformed the house into a palace for George IV, and Edward Blore added the iconic East Front (the facade visible from The Mall) in 1850.

The palace has 775 rooms, including 19 state rooms, 52 royal and guest bedrooms, 188 staff bedrooms, 92 offices, and 78 bathrooms. The gardens cover 39 acres and include a lake, a tennis court, and a helicopter landing pad.

The Changing of the Guard takes place on the forecourt regularly (daily from April to July, every other day the rest of the year), attracting thousands of spectators. The ceremony lasts about 45 minutes and involves soldiers from the Household Division in their famous red tunics and bearskin hats.

The Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Family in Exile is a hidden architectural treasure on Duke Street in Mayfair, just off Oxford Street. Most Londoners walk past it every day without knowing it's there.

The building was designed in 1891 by Alfred Waterhouse (the architect behind London's Natural History Museum) for a Congregational church called the King's Weigh House Chapel. The exterior is modest by London standards, but inside, the space is remarkable.

In 1967, the building was sold to the Ukrainian Catholic community to serve as the cathedral for the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of the Holy Family in London. The interior was adapted for Eastern Catholic worship, with an iconostasis (a screen of religious icons and paintings) created by the Ukrainian monk Juvenalij Mokrytsky. A confessional designed by J.F. Bentley, the architect of Westminster Cathedral, also survives from the building's earlier life.

The east window contains glass by Robert Anning Bell, one of the leading stained-glass artists of the early 20th century. In 2007, part of the ceiling collapsed, leading to a major refurbishment.

Since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the cathedral has become a rallying point for the British Ukrainian community, hosting prayer services, vigils, and community events. In 2013, the eparchy was elevated to a full bishopric by Pope Benedict XVI.

The current cathedral is the fifth church on this site. The previous one, Old St Paul's, was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. Wren was commissioned to design a replacement, and construction took 35 years (1675-1710). When the last stone of the lantern was placed, Wren's son Christopher Jr. set it while his 78-year-old father watched from below.

The dome is an engineering triumph. It consists of three shells: an inner dome visible from inside, an outer dome visible from outside, and a hidden structural cone between them that supports the lantern. The Whispering Gallery, running around the interior of the dome at 30 metres up, has a remarkable acoustic property: a whisper against the wall on one side can be heard clearly on the opposite side, 34 metres away.

St Paul's has hosted some of Britain's most significant ceremonies, including the funerals of Lord Nelson (1806) and Winston Churchill (1965), and the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer (1981). The pub was originally called the Eight Bells Alehouse (documented in 1755) and became the Ten Bells around 1788 when the nearby Christ Church Spitalfields installed a new set of chimes with ten bells. The Ten Bells is inextricably linked to the Jack the Ripper murders of 1888. At least two of the victims, Annie Chapman and Mary Jane Kelly, were known to have been regulars here, and the pub stood at the centre of the neighbourhood where the killings took place. For a period in the 1970s and 1980s, the pub was actually renamed the "Jack the Ripper" before reverting to its original name.

Today, the pub is a Grade II listed building with beautifully preserved Victorian tiling, a cocktail bar upstairs, and a reputation for quality beers and atmosphere. The surrounding streets, once the territory of the Ripper, are now home to Spitalfields Market, Brick Lane's restaurants, and a thriving gallery scene.

The brewery finally closed in 1989, a casualty of changing drinking habits and industry consolidation. But the 11-acre site was given new life as a mixed-use complex of markets, shops, galleries, restaurants, and event spaces. The brewing heritage lives on: the Truman's brand was revived in 2010, and actual beer production resumed in East London in 2013.

Today, the Truman Brewery hosts the Sunday UpMarket, vintage markets, food stalls, fashion pop-ups, and art exhibitions. The architecture is a mix of Georgian, Victorian, and industrial buildings, with the original 1724 Director's House and the iconic chimney stack still standing.
