Catania

Catania's cathedral sits on the ruins of ancient Roman baths, built between 1078 and 1093 by order of Roger I of Sicily. The original structure looked more like a fortress than a church, a fortified stronghold designed to protect as much as to inspire. That military appearance reflected the reality of life in medieval Sicily, where faith and defense were inseparable.

The cathedral's history is marked by repeated devastation and resurrection. On February 4, 1169, a catastrophic earthquake collapsed the ceiling during religious festivities, killing the Archbishop and many worshippers gathered inside. Fire ravaged the building in 1194. Then, in 1693, another massive earthquake nearly destroyed it entirely. Each time, Catania rebuilt.

The Baroque masterpiece visible today is the work of architect Vaccarini, who reconstructed the cathedral between 1733 and 1761. Pope Pius XI elevated it to a minor basilica in 1926.

The legends surrounding Saint Agatha herself are extraordinary. According to tradition, when King Frederick II ordered the destruction of Catania in 1232, he attended mass here and miraculously found text appearing before his eyes: "Do not offend the country of Agatha, for she avenges injuries." He revoked the destruction order immediately. Another legend tells of an eruption of Mount Etna when the saint's burial veil was carried out to meet the advancing lava. The veil turned bright red, and the lava stopped.

Basilica Cattedrale di Sant'Agata

Emperor Frederick II built Castello Ursino between 1239 and 1250 as a statement of absolute imperial power. The castle was considered impregnable, a massive stone fortress designed to dominate Catania's skyline and defend the capital city.

The castle's most dramatic political moment came in 1295, when it became the seat of the Sicilian Parliament that deposed King James II and elected Frederick III as King of Sicily. These walls witnessed the shifting of crowns and the rewriting of history.

Medieval intrigue reached its peak in 1397 when Frederick III's daughter Maria was kidnapped from the castle by the Count of Augusta, who opposed her planned marriage. She was eventually rescued and married her intended cousin Martin, but the scandal rocked the Sicilian court.

Nature nearly finished what armies could not. During the 1669 eruption of Mount Etna, lava approached from the south, but the castle's ramparts and moats diverted the flow back toward the sea. The fortress survived, but the landscape was permanently transformed. A castle that once overlooked the sea suddenly found itself landlocked, stranded by solidified lava.

Just 24 years later, the 1693 earthquake collapsed several towers. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, the castle served as a prison. Graffiti scratched by inmates remains visible on the walls, silent testimony to centuries of captivity.

Castello Ursino

One of Europe's largest monasteries, the Benedictine Monastery of San Nicolo l'Arena is among Sicily's greatest achievements in Late Baroque architecture. Founded in 1558 by reformed Benedictine monks, it was built on a monumental scale that reflected both spiritual devotion and earthly ambition.

Fate tested the monastery twice in quick succession. On March 8, 1669, Mount Etna erupted violently, and by the end of April, lava had engulfed the 16th-century building. Just 24 years later, the devastating 1693 earthquake killed 34 of the 48 monks in residence, nearly destroying the monastic community entirely.

But the Benedictines rebuilt, and the result is the extraordinary complex visible today. Two impressive cloisters, libraries, a basilica with soaring ceilings, a hanging garden, and 18th-century kitchens create a world within a world. The monastery even incorporates a Roman house discovered during construction, adding an ancient layer to the Baroque splendor.

Guided tours run daily in both Italian and English, taking approximately 75 minutes. The route covers both cloisters, the 16th-century cellar (now a library), the Roman house remains, the Novices' Garden, and the 18th-century kitchens where monastic meals were once prepared.

Today the monastery houses the University of Catania's Department of Humanities, blending religious heritage with modern academic life. Students study where monks once prayed, keeping the tradition of learning alive in these ancient halls.
