Over Gadsby's Tavern

Gadsby's Tavern in Old Town Alexandria was once described as the finest public house in America, and its guest list backs that up. George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, and the Marquis de Lafayette all walked through these doors. The site consists of two buildings: a tavern built around 1785 and a larger City Hotel added in 1792, both constructed by entrepreneur John Wise. It's named after Englishman John Gadsby, who leased the buildings and ran them from 1796 to 1808, building a reputation for elegance and hospitality that spread across the new nation. Washington himself attended the tavern's Birthnight Ball celebration in 1798 and again in 1799, the year before his death. That tradition continues today: every February, Gadsby's Tavern Museum hosts a Birthnight Ball in his honour. During its heyday between 1785 and 1815, the tavern was the centre of Alexandria's political, economic, and social life. Guests wrote in their letters and journals about the lavishness of the experience. It was where deals were struck, alliances formed, and the early republic's social calendar played out over dinners and balls. Threatened with demolition in the early 20th century, the buildings were saved by the American Legion, Post Twenty-four. The complex was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1963. If you're exploring Old Town Alexandria on a Questo quest, Gadsby's Tavern is a place where history feels tangibly close. The Founding Fathers ate, drank, and schemed here, and the building has barely changed since.
