Informazioni su Stone Gate
The Stone Gate (Kamenita vrata) is the only surviving medieval gate of Gradec, the old Upper Town of Zagreb, Croatia. Today the stone passage doubles as a candlelit chapel, where a painting of the Virgin Mary and Child draws locals and visitors alike. It is one of the most atmospheric corners of the city and one of its most loved places of devotion.
The story behind it
Gradec was a walled hilltop town, and the Stone Gate was one of its entrances in the medieval fortifications. It is the only gate that still stands, while the others are long gone. The gate you walk through now carries the marks of centuries of rebuilding.
Its fame rests on a fire in 1731 that swept through Gradec and destroyed much of the town. According to tradition, a painting of the Virgin Mary and Child that hung at the gate came through undamaged. People took this as a sign, and the passage became a shrine. The painting now stands on the altar inside, and the Virgin is honoured as a protector of Zagreb.
What to look for
- The marble plaques on the chapel walls, many engraved with the words "Hvala ti" ("Thank you"), left by people who felt their prayers were answered.
- The painting of the Virgin Mary and Child on the altar, framed by flickering candles and flowers.
- The heavy stone arch itself, which shows how the gate once worked as a defensive entrance into Gradec.
- The quiet of the passage, where people stop to pray or light a candle even though the street and its visitors flow just outside.
Tips for your visit
- Plan on 10 to 15 minutes at the gate itself, longer if you want to sit in the chapel or take in the atmosphere.
- You can walk through the passage and look into the chapel. Keep your voice low and be respectful of people praying, and check current opening hours for any special services.
- Early morning or later in the evening is usually calmer and the candlelight feels stronger.
- The gate sits on the edge of the Upper Town, so it combines easily with a wander through the nearby streets and squares of Gradec.
