Informazioni su Lotrščak Tower
Lotrščak Tower is a 13th-century defensive tower on the edge of the Upper Town in Zagreb, Croatia. It is best known for the Grič cannon, fired every day at noon, and for the view over the city from its lookout. It sits beside the funicular and the Strossmayer promenade, so it is one of the easiest historic places in Zagreb to reach.
The story behind it
The tower was built in the 13th century to guard the southern approach to the medieval town of Gradec, near the small Dverce gate. Its name is usually traced to the Latin phrase campana latrunculorum, the thieves' bell. A bell rang each evening to warn that the city gates were about to be locked, so that people outside would hurry in or stay out. Over the centuries the tower's role shifted from military lookout to a more everyday building, and today visitors come mainly for the view.
The noon cannon is the tower's best-known tradition, and the daily shot has been fired since 1877. A popular legend explains it: a cannon shot from the hill supposedly landed on the table of an Ottoman pasha camped across the Sava river, and the frightened army gave up on attacking Zagreb. Treat it as a good story rather than documented history, but locals still enjoy telling it, and the shot at midday still makes visitors jump.
What to look for
- The stout, plain stone body of the tower, which still looks like the defensive structure it once was.
- The cannon on the upper level, from which the Grič shot is fired at noon.
- The panorama from the lookout, with the red roofs of the Lower Town, the cathedral spires and the city spreading south.
- The funicular terminal right beside the tower, a short ride linking the Upper and Lower Town.
Tips for your visit
- Plan about 30 to 45 minutes if you want to climb to the lookout and take in the view; check current opening hours before you go.
- Arrive a little before noon to hear the cannon, and keep in mind that the shot is loud, especially if you are close to the tower.
- The Strossmayer promenade runs along the ridge close by and is a pleasant place for a slow stroll with city views.
- The Museum of Broken Relationships is a short walk away in the Upper Town, and the cobbled streets around the tower are easy to combine with it.
