Informazioni su Dom Tower
The Dom Tower (Domtoren) is a medieval church tower in the heart of Utrecht and, at about 112 metres, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. It was built in the 14th century as part of St Martin's Cathedral and now stands apart from the church, because a storm in 1674 brought down the nave between them.
The story behind it
Construction of the tower began in 1321 and was completed in 1382. It belonged to a cathedral dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, a Roman cavalry officer who converted to Christianity in the 4th century and later became Bishop of Tours. His best-known legend tells of a freezing beggar: Martin cut his military cloak in two with his sword and gave half away.
In 1674 a violent storm struck Utrecht and collapsed the nave of the cathedral. It was never rebuilt, so the tower and the church (the Domkerk) have stood separately ever since. The open space between them is now part of Domplein, and the gap is still the clearest clue to what the cathedral once looked like.
What to look for
- Stand in the space between the tower and the Domkerk and picture the missing nave that once joined them.
- Follow the tower's lines upward from the solid lower stages to the lighter, more open top, and notice how it dominates the skyline from many streets away.
- Look at the Academiegebouw of Utrecht University, which stands next to the cathedral and shows how the square became part of university life.
- Listen for the carillon, whose bells ring out over the city from inside the tower.
Tips for your visit
- You can see the tower and walk around Domplein for free. Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the outside, longer if you add the church.
- Climbing the roughly 465 steps to the top is the way to get the panoramic view. Check current opening hours and booking options before you plan around it.
- Go in the morning for softer light and fewer people in your photos.
- The Domkerk and the Academiegebouw are right beside the tower, so you can combine all three in one stop.
