Informazioni su The Church of St. Nicholas
The Church of St. Nicholas is a small Romanesque church on the south-eastern slope of Marjan Hill in Split, Croatia, built in 1219. It is one of the quiet stone chapels tied to the hermits who once lived on Marjan, and it gives a sense of the hill's long spiritual and wartime past, away from the crowds of the old town.
The story behind it
According to the route creators, the church was built in 1219 thanks to two benefactors, Rako and his wife Elisabeth, who gave it to the abbey of St. Stephen in Split. It first served a medieval fraternity. Later it became the home of hermits, who built simple lodgings next to the church.
People in Split often regarded these hermits as holy men and brought them food and supplies. Life on the hill was not always peaceful, though. In one of the 17th-century wars between the Venetians and the Ottomans, Ottoman troops raided the countryside around Split, and a hermit named Marko is said to have been beheaded at St. Nicholas. It is a story handed down locally, and it adds a darker note to what looks like a peaceful spot today.
What to look for
- The small, plain stone building itself, whose modest size and simple lines are typical of Romanesque chapels.
- The area right next to the church, where the hermits' lodgings once stood, and which shows how little space a recluse needed.
- The way the church sits on the slope, with the pines of Marjan behind it and the Adriatic below.
- The paths around it, which give glimpses of the sea and the islands through the trees.
Tips for your visit
- Plan about 15 to 30 minutes for the church and its surroundings, longer if you combine it with a wider walk on Marjan.
- Go in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer and the hillside is cooler in summer.
- The church is small, so do not count on going inside. Check current opening hours or access before you set out.
- Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as the paths on Marjan are uneven in places and shade is patchy.
See it on a quest
You can reach the church on foot as one stop of Split Marjan Hill Witch Hunt: Split Best Viewpoints and Panoramic Sights, a self-guided walk across Marjan Hill built around its viewpoints. The app tells you about each place as you arrive and sets a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so you look at the stonework and the surroundings properly instead of just passing by. You start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join. The quest is paid, and one ticket covers the whole group.
