Informazioni su The Chief Sealth statue

The Chief Sealth statue stands at 99 Yesler Way in Pioneer Square, the oldest part of downtown Seattle. It honors Chief Seattle, the Duwamish and Suquamish leader whose name the city carries, and it sits in a neighborhood where much of Seattle's early story can still be read in the buildings and streets.

The story behind it

Chief Seattle, known in his own language as Si'ahl, was a leader of the Duwamish and Suquamish peoples and lived in the area as the first settlers arrived. The city was named for him, and he died in 1866. A statue here is a reminder that the place was home to Native people long before it became a port town.

Pioneer Square is Seattle's first downtown, and the buildings around the statue have their own story. After the great fire of 1889 burned the wooden town, it was rebuilt in brick and stone. The ground here was low and boggy and the waters of Elliott Bay caused trouble, so the streets were raised. Ground-floor storefronts ended up partly below street level, and for a while business carried on in those lower levels while the new streets went in above.

What to look for

  • Look at the statue itself and its pose, then think about how the man it represents is tied to the name of the whole city.
  • Watch the sidewalks for patches of coloured glass set into the pavement, which once let daylight down into the basement levels below.
  • Look up at the heavy stone and brick buildings with rounded arches and sturdy facades, a Romanesque look that gives the district a consistent character.
  • Notice how some doorways and windows sit lower than the present street, a sign of how much the ground level was raised.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 10 to 15 minutes for the statue, and more if you want to wander the surrounding blocks of Pioneer Square.
  • Go in the morning or late afternoon, when the streets are quieter and the light on the brick facades is softer.
  • The statue is outdoors in a public part of the neighborhood, so you can see it without going inside anywhere. Shops, galleries and cafes nearby keep their own hours, so check current opening hours.
  • Pioneer Place Park, with its pergola and totem pole, is a short walk away, and the waterfront is not far downhill.

See it on a quest

The statue works well as one stop on Seattle Gold Rush: Race to the S.S. Portland, a self-guided walk with a Gold Rush theme. You reach the place on foot as part of a longer route through the area, the app tells you about each spot as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join.
