The Chapel of Saint Roch (Szent Rókus-kápolna) is a small Baroque chapel on Gyulai Pál utca in Budapest's eighth district, next to the Rókus Hospital. It dates from the early 18th century and was built after a plague epidemic, dedicated to Saint Roch, the saint people prayed to against plague. It is a quiet reminder of the older Pest that stood before the grand boulevards were laid out.

The story behind it

The chapel belongs to the years after the plague of 1710 and 1711, when towns across Hungary built churches and chapels in thanks for survival. Saint Roch was the natural patron for such a building, and the chapel became tied to the hospital that grew up beside it. The hospital still carries his name in Hungarian, Rókus.

The streets around it were shaped by a later disaster. In March 1838 the Danube, swollen by melting ice, flooded Pest and Buda, and large blocks of ice turned the current destructive. Pest suffered especially badly, with thousands of houses damaged or destroyed and more than 100 lives lost. Miklós Wesselényi rescued people by boat, and reformers such as Széchenyi and Kossuth pressed for better flood defences. The rebuilding that followed helped set the city on the road to the modern Budapest that took shape later in the century.
