Walk through Cavtat old town, a small Dalmatian coastal town just 18 km south of Dubrovnik, where two thousand years of history survive in stone, canvas and silence.
Set on the wooded Rat peninsula, Cavtat was once the Roman city of Epidaurum. Later it lived under the Republic of Dubrovnik, and later still it became the birthplace of Vlaho Bukovac, Croatia's most celebrated painter. This walk connects all of it: ancient walls, a Rector's Palace, a small art gallery, a mausoleum that won the Grand Prix in Paris, a Franciscan monastery, and the house where a boy who sailed to New York came home and put paint on the walls.
Unhurried, sensory, and full of genuine stories. The antidote to crowded Dubrovnik, nine chapters away.

Starting and ending at the bus terminal, this 1.3 km loop runs from Vlaho Bukovac's house past the Franciscan monastery to the Racic Mausoleum and back via the Rector's Palace, in about an hour and a quarter. Day-trippers from Dubrovnik and anyone curious about Roman Epidaurum or the painter get a compact, self-paced look. Skip it if you planned an evening stroll, as play after dark is not recommended.
